Spider-Man: Blue

Client: Marvel Comics
Date: April 4, 2003
Posted by JG

My favorite of Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale's "color" books, both because it weaves in and around a sweet batch of late '60s Spidey issues (filling in a crucial missing event), and because the story just dang near brings a tear to my eye every time I think about it. Not to mention Tim's killer, killer take on both Spidey and the ladies.

The collection design was inspired by Blue Note Records album covers of the '30s and '40s. Unfortunately, the Clarendon font got lost at the output stage (and nobody bothered contacting us), plus Marvel deleted the pulp book cover and old movie poster (on the "Cover Concepts" page) that inspired Tim's art.

So if you have a copy of the finished book, you will probably notice it doesn't have nearly the same impact as what's presented here. Which brings yet another tear to my eye... Blue, indeed.
